This module is for fourth year Mathematical Physics students. The module allows students to carry out an in depth investigation into a theoretical problem over a full year. Projects are selected which will expose students to new topics in physics or expand their knowledge of topics that they have seen in the course. Projects must also have a genuine problem-solving aspect that will require the students to carry out calculations (either analytical or numerical) themselves rather than relying on reproducing work from published sources.

This module gives you an opportunity to investigate a topic in depth and to become familiar with an area of physics which is the subject of research here at Nottingham. In addition, this module will give you experience of:

the methodology of research;

writing a report in the style of a scientific paper;

giving a scientific presentation to your peers.

preparing and defending a poster explaining your work.

In the majority of cases you will also gain experience of working as part of a team.

The scientific direction of the project is a matter to be agreed between you, your partner and the project supervisor. The assessment of the project is the responsibility of the module convenor although the project supervisor will play a major role in this.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated:

a working understanding of some of the methods used to solve a problem in applied

mathematics or theoretical physics;

the ability to set up a mathematical model describing a specified physical problem and

to apply appropriate analytical and/or numerical techniques in its solution;

the ability to apply high levels of problem solving and computer literacy;

the ability to communicate their work clearly both orally and in writing to other scientists
