Target Students:

Only available for BSc/MSci Chemistry and Molecular Physics OR BSc/MSci Biochemistry and Biological Chemistry students OR Natural Sciences OR BSc/MSci Biochemistry AND Only available for Level 2 students.                                                        CHEM2002 cannot be taken if student is taking/has taken CHEM2010. Available to JYA/Erasmus students.

Summary Of Content:

The module provides both a theoretical description of modern spectroscopic techniques (NMR, IR, and mass spectrometry) for structural analysis of organic and biological molecules and practical applications of these techniques in problem solving. Aspects of the stereochemistry of bio-organic molecules are covered, including conformational analysis and stereocontrol in bio-organic reactions.

Develop an understanding of modern spectroscopic techniques (NMR, IR, UV and mass spectrometry) for the characterisation of organic and biological molecules to the extent that students have an intuitive approach to problem solving and structural analysis. Aspects of the stereochemistry of bio-organic molecules, including prochirality, molecular chirality and properties of non-racemic compounds, conformational analysis and aspects of stereocontrol in bio-organic reactions are developed.

Learning Outcome:

Knowledge and Understanding: Students should have an understanding of:
1. The theory of NMR including the origin of 1H and 13C chemical shifts and J-couplings.
2. The basics of IR spectroscopy and modes of vibration;
3. Mass spectrometry as complementary methods in structural analysis.
4. Conformational analysis and stereocontrol in bio-organic reactions.

Intellectual Skills: Be able to:
1. Carry out structural analysis in a problem-solving context.
2. Identify characteristic 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and IR signals related to chemical structure.
3. Use stereochemical issues to predict structure and chemical reactivity.

Transferable/Key Skills: Problem-solving and written communication skills.
