Available to all students registered for the M.Sci. Single Honours degree in Biochemistry and Biological Chemistry

Summary Of Content:

This module will provide experience of contemporary research methods by allowing students to design and perform experiments aimed at solving a specific biochemical problem. They will collect, analyse and interpret data, read and collate previous results relevant to their problem, write a clear and concise report and have the opportunity to discuss their work with academic members of staff in a viva. Students will also present a short talk on their work to the rest of the class.

Learning Outcome:

Knowledge and understanding: Students will develop a deep understanding of a chosen biochemical topic through researching the area chosen and practical work on a new aspect of the topic. Intellectual skills: Students will understand the research that has previously been reported on their chosen topic. Students will be able to critically analyse the work reported on their topic and be able to design a research programme aimed at developing a particular area of research. Students will be able to report their research findings in an extended scientific report and be able to discuss their results with a member of academic staff. Professional practical skills: Critical analysis of research data; use of computers in biochemical research; design of biochemical experiments. Transferable skills: Use of the library; writing of a laboratory report; enhanced oral and written communication skills; recognise the need for integrity and professional standards and apply them to the project preparation
