Target Students:

The module is compulsory for Genetics students, and optional for others, typically being taken by some Natural Sciences, Biology, Zoology, and Biochemistry and Genetics students. Available to JYA/Erasmus students.

Summary Of Content:

The module will describe the history and practice of population genetics research, and will focus on a quantitative approach to the subject, with training in problem-solving skills. The ways in which the neo-Darwinian synthesis reconciled Mendelian genetics with Darwinian evolution will be discussed. We will explore the ways in which molecular datasets can be incorporated into population genetics theory, and the links between microevolutionary and macroevolutionary change. The differentiation between populations will be investigated, with training in computer software identifying population sub-structure. Modern analyses based on the neutral theory and the coalescent will be demonstrated, with the origins of humans being considered as an illustrative case.

To provide a high level course in quantitative population genetics theory and its links to molecular variation. The module will be closely related to modules on Human Variation (LIFE3009) and Conservation Genetics (LIFE3011). In addition, a quantitative understanding of evolution clarifies all biological interpretation. Objectives: Students will be able to treat datasets concerning molecular variation within populations in a quantitative way and will be able to understand the theory on which these analyses are based.
