Target Students:

All students registered for BSc or MSci degrees in Biochemistry and Biological Chemistry.

Summary Of Content:

This module provides the opportunity to perform a number of fundamental and advanced molecular biology techniques. It will investigate the contribution of individual amino acids to the structure and function of two mitogen-responsive transcription factors.

Procedures to isolate and process DNA samples, carry out the polymerase chain reaction, analyse DNA molecules in the laboratory in conjunction with sequence databases will be used. Proteins will be expressed and purified; their functions will be analysed in biochemical experiments. Individual results and data from the class will be analysed as part of an overall project to investigate relevant scientific questions.

Learning Outcome:

Experimental skills: carry out PCR and restriction digests, prepare agarose gels and purify DNA molecules, introduce plasmids into prokaryotic cells, prepare plasmid DNA and purify proteins from bacterial cell lysates, perform in vitro protein kinase reactions, use immunological techniques to identify proteins and detect post-translational modifications, assemble and detect DNA:protein complexes, analyse results using digital imaging systems.
Transferable skills: use of biological databases and 3D molecular modelling; use of online library and reference management software; oral and written presentation of scientific data.
