Target Students:

Compulsory for all students taking the MSc in Molecular Genetics and Diagnostics. Also available to other students.

Summary Of Content:

This module will use several genetic regulatory systems to illustrate how key virulence factors are regulated in bacterial and viral pathogens. These examples will also be used to demonstrate how tools used for genomic analysis can be used to diagnose and monitor infectious diseases.

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the molecular genetic systems which underpin virulence in bacterial and viral pathogens. Students are encouraged to consider disease from both the human and pathogen perspective throughout. This will be achieved using a combination of lecture sessions and interactive workshops.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of this module, students will be able to:
describe how virulence mechanisms are regulated at the genetic level using several bacterial and viral pathogens as examples.
Explain how different triggers can activate or repress these genetic regulatory systems and how their regulation underpins disease.

Students will also develop skills in the following:
1. Critical thinking
2. Problem solving
3. Oral and written communication
4. Self management
