Summary Of Content:

This module builds on the practical, analytical and communication skills acquired in the first year and introduces more advanced experiments across Inorganic, Organic and Physical chemistry (note – students choose 2 of the 3 from Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry). Increasing use is made of spectroscopic and other analytical techniques in the characterisation of compounds. More detailed laboratory reports will be required. Each laboratory component is a non-compensatable course element. In order to pass the course students must attain a mark of at least 40% in each laboratory component (i.e. inorganic laboratory practical, organic laboratory practical, physical laboratory practical). This policy is in place so that students who proceed to the following year have an acceptable level of laboratory experience, taking into account both practical achievement and the safety of themselves, fellow students and staff.

This module will build on skills developed in CHEM1020 so that students;
• Become increasingly familiar with a range of chemical techniques and apparatus appropriate to the study of inorganic, organic and physical chemistry.
• Learn how to carry out an assessment of hazards and prepare risk assessments for experiments themselves.
• Continue to develop an awareness and appreciation for the safe handling of chemicals.
• Continue to develop careful observational skills and an appreciation for the importance of recording experimental data accurately.
• Further develop their time management skills. • continue to develop scientific report writing skills.
• Become more familiar in consulting the chemical literature and using library resources to aid compound identification.

Learning Outcome:

Practical laboratory skills, problem solving, time management, written communication skills. Many of the learning outcomes are similar to those for CHEM1020 but students will be able to function at a much higher level.  Students will:
• Be able to perform a range of standard & more advanced synthetic and analytical practical procedures safely and reliably using Good Chemistry Laboratory Practice (GCLP).
• Know how to prepare Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and risk assessments.
• Be proficient in planning and organising time so that experiments are performed efficiently in the allocated time.
• Be competent in calculating amounts of reagents accurately.
• Be capable of accurately and precisely measuring reagents and preparing solutions.
• Be able to scientifically interpret results and observations and report your findings in a concise manner.
