Insects are incredibly diverse organisms which evolved to fill a variety of niches as the structure and function of their mouthparts changed. By studying insect mouthparts, we are able to understand the diet of the respective species and how they exploit their food sources. Insect mouthparts are derived from the appendages of four of the segments forming the insect head.
