This module enables students to undertake a year-long, open-ended group project. Students will develop practical skills in a broad range of design and manufacturing disciplines with real commercial, practical and business constraints. Students are tasked with a project, projects are generally specified by an academic who is to be perceived as the customer although opportunity for students to shape the project as well as industrial partners do exist. Students must endeavour to understand the brief and prepare a statement of requirements. This is used as the starting point for a rigorous design process (Pugh/RR methodology). Successful completion of periodic reviews preliminary design review (PDR) and critical design review (CDR) leads to a phase of manufacture followed by delivery of assessed content – business plan, report, design history file and final presentation of deliverables. During this time the students are expected to adopt the role of a professional engineer. Emphasis is placed upon creativity, ability to adhere to process, communication, critical problem solving and working well within the team.
