The aim of this module is to introduce more advanced topics in linear elastic solid mechanics, plasticity and failure, introduce relevant analysis methods for this materials behaviour and demonstrate the application of these methods to the design of engineering components.

LO1 - Describe and explain the relationships between applied loads and resulting stresses and strains in several complex engineering scenarios including combined loading, bending, pressure, torsion and thermal loading (knowledge and comprehension). |

LO2 - Describe and explain the fundamentals of elastic and post-elastic materials response and how this can lead to deformation and failure in engineering components (knowledge and comprehension). |

LO3 - Apply methods of engineering analysis based on the above concepts and predict deformation and failure in various engineering scenarios (comprehension, application, analysis). |

LO4 - Recognise and construct an appropriate analysis technique to apply when presented with an engineering scenario in a solid mechanics context (comprehension, application, analysis). |

LO5 - Clearly report analysis of data and engineering calculations using an appropriate level of explanation showing evidence of judgement in selecting analysis techniques and critical assessment of results. |
