The aim of this module is to introduce students to essential facts, concepts and principles of materials used in Biomedical Materials Science (Biomaterials) and its underpinning science and engineering. The module will also introduce the multidisciplinary nature of the subject and illustrate additional factors such as ethical, commercial and regulatory constraints that influence materials selection for medical devices.

LO1 - Describe and organise the key materials and their properties that are used in Biomedical Materials Science. Select materials based on criteria key to biomaterial applications (knowledge and comprehension). |

LO2 - Understand the principles behind the materials properties from atomic to bulk structures. Explain property changes and their influence on materials selection for applications (comprehension and application, moving towards analysis). |
