This module sets out to equip students with the ability to create and run elementary programs with MATLAB and to exploit the tools which are built-in within it. As well as giving some insight into what all computer programming languages can do, the module endeavours to equip students with a tool which will serve them well through the remainder of their engineering degree.

LO1 – Understand the concepts of computation using variables and appreciate the ideas of data-types and limited precision. |

LO2 – Demonstrate an appreciation of the fact that computer programmes run instructions in a sequence and that the internal data within a program can affect that sequence. |

LO3 – Decompose a programming problem into manageable pieces. |

LO4 – Interpret and adapt a computer program already written and in the case of fairly simple tasks, to modify that program to expand its functionality. |

LO5 – Appreciate that although the function of every computer programme is to transform data, sometimes that data can have a very direct effect – movement of objects etc. |
