This module introduces students to the methods used in the fabrication of medical devices and to methods for modification of surfaces to improve their biocompatibility. It aims to give them a working knowledge of these techniques, and an understanding of their effects on unprocessed/unmodified raw materials

LO1 - Select suitable processing routes by which devices can be fabricated from metallic, ceramic and polymeric biomaterials. |
|
|
|
LO2 - Understand the consequences of the processing route chosen on the performance of the biomaterial in vivo, particularly on the host-implant response. Other factors covered include mechanical properties and fatigue performance. |
|
|
|
LO3 - Explain the ability of certain biomaterials to influence healing, both positively and negatively. This applies to encapsulation of synthetic implants and to active and biodegradable implants used in regenerative medicine. |
|
|
|
LO4 - Specify suitable materials for particular biomedical applications. Students are encouraged to appreciate the consequences of material choices, with particular emphasis on surface finish, teratology and wear in joint replacements. |
|
|
|
LO5 - Demonstrate the ability to give a scientific presentation. All students enrolled on MM2EBS are expected to give a presentation on a topic related to the course as part of their continuous assessment. |
