The aim of this module is to develop the student’s ability to analyse more advanced topics in linear elastic solid mechanics including asymmetrical bending, shear stresses in bending and the analysis of thick-walled cylinders and rotating disks. Failure of components due to elastic instability will also be introduced. Methods of analysis for more complex engineering components will be introduced and practised including strain energy methods and the finite element method.

LO1 – Describe & explain the relationships between applied loads & resulting stresses & strains in several complex engineering scenarios including asymmetrical bending, thick cylinders & rotating disks, buckling scenarios & shear |

LO2 – Describe and explain more advanced methods of engineering analysis for dealing with complex loading and component geometry including strain energy methods and the finite element method. |

LO3 – Apply methods of engineering analysis (including strain energy methods and finite element methods) based on the above concepts and predict deformation and failure in various engineering scenarios. |

LO4 – Recognise and construct an appropriate analysis technique to apply when presented with an engineering scenario in a solid mechanics context. |

LO5 – Clearly report analysis of data and engineering calculations using an appropriate level of explanation showing evidence of judgement in selecting analysis techniques and critical assessment of results. |
