Understand how a spectrophotmeter is used to measure yield and quality of DNA preparations

Understand the basic biochemistry of DNA isolation methods

Know how to use micropipettes and microcentrifuges correctly and safely.

Learn how to correctly set up a compound microscope for laboratory use, including an understanding of the magnification power offered using different lenses and calibration of the eyepiece graticule for measurement of specimens

Learn how to use a compound microscope to identify and distinguish microbiological specimens, including an understanding of the basis of differences seen using bright field versus phase contrast microscopy.

Learn the importance of good laboratory practice when examining specimens by microscopy. For example, the importance of mixing specimens, taking replicate measurements, and correct mathematical analysis of data collected.

Learn to evaluate whether micrograph images have been produced by light microscopy or electron microscopy, and also the different sub groups of microscopy e.g. fluorescence versus bright field light microscopy; transmission versus scanning electron microscopy.
